Guide: How to Turn On/Off Auto-Lock in Windows 10 PC
Windows 10’s lock screen divides many users. Some don’t mind seeing a nice photo along with a news story, some notifications and the time of day. Others think it’s a shame. Why click or drag to get to the actual login screen? Disabling the lock screen is completely possible as long as you’re using the Creators Update or anything newer, including the Windows 10 April 2018 Update. The required steps are a little different for that Home and Pro versions, but we’ll explore both here.
What is automatic locking
Auto-lock prevents unauthorized access to your computer and thus protects your personal files and other data in your absence. Although you can manually lock the computer (press Windows key + L), you forget this every time you leave the computer. That’s when auto-lock comes into play. Depending on the timer you set, the screen will turn off and the computer will be locked. The only way to unlock it is to enter the set password or PIN. It’s a beautiful concept that I like and on my own laptop always. I am a bit paranoid when it comes to privacy and security. Blame it on all the hacking news I keep reading these days.
Why use or not?
As mentioned earlier, you should use automatic locking on your Windows 10 computer to protect it from unauthorized access. Anyone can steal your information and sell or use it against you, or install unwanted software, malware or spyware. Some people have a nasty habit of poking into other people’s personal lives. Auto-lock can prevent that to a certain extent. It can also save energy, especially useful when the laptop draws power from the battery. There are several reasons to disable auto-lock as well. For example, you live alone and no one has access to your computer. Maybe your office is always locked when you are not there. And you trust that your partner cannot access your computer without your permission. In such cases, regularly locking and unlocking the computer can be annoying. Specifically, you can set Windows to show upcoming calendar events, weather reports, unread emails, and other important information on the lock screen. It’s not just a beautiful wallpaper anymore.
How to Turn it off or on
Your computer will never turn off the screen and automatically lock or go to sleep. It only happens when the screen is off and the computer goes to sleep with auto-lock feature starts to work.
Registry and Group Policy Hack
If the above solution doesn’t work for you, there are two hacks to enforce these settings on Windows 10. The registry hack is more suitable for Windows Home Edition while Group Policy is better for Windows Pro.
How to Manage Auto-Lock in Windows Screen
Instead of setting the screen and sleep settings to Never as we did above, set it to a number that you are comfortable with. You can always adjust it to a good place later. I have it set to Never when plugged in and 10 minutes when running on battery power. My laptop is always connected when i’m working home since I don’t have to worry about unauthorized access there. Of course it may be different for you depending on where you live and work. Another important setting here is the battery or power settings, where you can manage the sleep and sleep settings. If you use a combination of the two, you can come up with a plan that works for you.
